Any of various size round containers used for baking pies. Pie pans come in a variety of materials including aluminum, glass, steel (black and tinned) and stoneware. For crisp crusts, dark metal pans are the best. Pie pans have gently sloping sides, whereas tart tins have straight sides. Standard pie pans come in 8, 9 and 10 inches in diameter and range from 1 to 1½ inches deep. Deep-dish pie plates typically range from 9 to 11 inches in diameter, and from 1½ to 2 inches deep.
