Pronunciation: [bah-RAH-suh; bah-ROH-suh]
This important Australian wine-producing region is located in the state of South Australia about 40 miles northeast of Adelaide. Vines were first planted in the Barossa in 1847, and over the years it's become one of Australia's best-known wine regions. Among the more successful white grapes in this region are chardonnay, riesling sémillon. Shiraz (syrah)with some vines dating back to the mid-1800sis the most successful red grape, followed by cabernet sauvignon, grenache and Mataro (mourvèdre).
